Chemical Engineers will probably have the best background for hydrogen fuel technology. While my thermodynamics class, for example, covered fuel cells in one chapter only, the required courses have an extensive enough background to be able to learn about fuel cells and understand what is going on with ease.
Some of the courses are General Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Thermodynamics. However with Chemical Engineering there is enough background as well to be able to work with other types of fuel, aside from hydrogen fuel cells.
