The metals decompose, adding to the product of the hydrogen. You’re producing hydrogen oxygen and chlorine this way. my guess is that the oxygen is reacting with the metals, causing the corrosion, and releasing chlorine gas where the oxygen should have been produced, because of the salt (sodium ~Chloride~). If we could just filter the gunk off, we might have a usable product.
