Can a Car Really Run on Water?

Why it can’t work

Water is what you get after hydrogen has been burned. Chemically, H₂O sits at the bottom of the energy hill: combining hydrogen and oxygen releases energy, and the resulting water molecule holds none of it.

To get hydrogen back out of water, you have to push it back up the hill with electrolysis — and thermodynamics guarantees the round trip loses energy at every step:

  1. The alternator converts engine power to electricity at roughly 50–60% efficiency.
  2. Electrolysis converts that electricity to hydrogen at 60–80% efficiency in ideal industrial conditions — far less in a jar under your hood.
  3. The engine burns the hydrogen at perhaps 25–35% thermal efficiency.

No independent lab ever replicated his claims. His 1998 death from a brain aneurysm fuels conspiracy theories, but the physics verdict was in long before.
