HHO kits are the commercial descendants of the “run your car on water” myth — real hardware, real bubbles, and a real invoice, wrapped around an energy claim that has never survived measurement. This domain once promoted them; this page is the correction.
What an HHO kit actually is
A typical kit contains:
- An electrolyzer cell — metal plates in a jar of water mixed with an electrolyte (usually potassium hydroxide or baking soda)
- Wiring to the battery/alternator, often with a relay and fuse
- A hose to the air intake, delivering the hydrogen-oxygen gas
- Sometimes an “EFIE” module designed to trick the oxygen sensor so the computer leans out the fuel mixture
Power the plates, and electrolysis splits water into two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen — a mix sellers call “HHO” or Brown’s gas. That part is ordinary chemistry and genuinely happens.
The energy accounting
The problem is where the electricity comes from. Your alternator is spun by the engine, which burns gasoline to spin it. Follow one watt through the system:

For every unit of fuel energy diverted into making HHO, roughly 2–3% comes back as useful work. The kit is a fuel consumer with extra steps. This is why no law of tuning, plate design, or electrolyte recipe can rescue the concept — the loss is structural.
The volumes are also tiny: a cell drawing 20 amps produces on the order of 1–2 liters of HHO per minute, while an engine at highway speed inhales 2,000+ liters of air per minute. The gas is a rounding error in the cylinder.
Why testimonials disagree with physics
Mileage testimonials are sincere but unreliable, because tank-to-tank fuel economy naturally swings ±10% with temperature, wind, routes, and driving style. Add the placebo effect — people who just installed a gadget drive like hypermilers — and “I gained 4 MPG” is exactly what uncontrolled measurement produces. Controlled testing removes those variables, which is why the EPA’s device evaluations across decades of aftermarket “gas savers” found none delivering the advertised gains.
The kits bundled with sensor-spoofing EFIE modules muddy things further: leaning the mixture can nudge economy numbers while raising combustion temperatures — a trade that risks burned valves and damaged catalytic converters, no hydrogen required.
The real costs
- $50–$400 for hardware that returns nothing measurable
- Sensor and intake damage from electrolyte vapor
- Check-engine lights and failed emissions tests from confused fuel trims
- Warranty and insurance exposure — it’s an unapproved fuel-system modification
- Fire risk from hydrogen pooling under a closed hood
Bottom line
HHO kits produce real gas and fake savings. The electricity to make the gas costs more fuel than the gas returns — a loss dictated by thermodynamics, not by kit quality. If you want genuinely better mileage: proper tire pressure, unhurried acceleration, and cruise control on the highway will each do more than any jar of bubbling electrolyte, and all three are free.
